  • As an artist who is creative I get bored with doing the same thing over and over. Typically I try and one up what I did the last shoot, creating something better that makes me feel like I’ve achieved something in this directive. Since admitting that I was an artist rather than a technician in the world of photography I’ve pushed as hard as I can to be better always. And I’ve decided that I will hence forth be going on sabbatical from time to time to refocus my mind to be sharper and more creative. Gary Larson, the creator of the Far Side comic strip did and I’ve decided that so will I. Today was the beginning of my sabbatical.

Behind the studio is an old blue Datsun truck and just by coincidence, Christina happened to be wearing blue. The landlord stores it there because our rear parking lot is as big as our front parking lot, but not one person parks back there.

The above picture reminds me of a still from a Hitchcock movie. Love the feel of it in B&W.

I got the opportunity to shoot a condo on Lamar in South Austin today. Kind of a different world than my usual world of weddings. It was so quiet. There were no people at all. I got to spend hours listing to nothing but my iPod. I listened to a lot of my favorite band, Cake.

Nicole and Travis had a wonderful wedding today! In the early afternoon we arrived at the Hilton and entered into Nicole’s room where she was getting ready to the Austin skyline through the window of her 25th floor room. Soon as I saw this out of the window I had the first shot below in mind.

Their ceremony was beautiful at the Central Presbyterian Church in downtown Austin. After a few pictures were snapped, the happy couple were whisked down the street to the Austin Club for their reception. The Austin Club is one of my favorite places for a wedding reception! The food is excellent and the staff really seems to care.

The wedding was coordinated by Tammy of Sparkling Engagements who I can not recommend highly enough. Having a coordinator makes a wedding easier for the bride and groom but also for the photographer and everyone else who won’t have to bug the bride with a question. The cake was from the best cake maker in town, Simon Lee. I could eat until I passed out it is so very good.

After the reception the bride and groom got in a carriage and went to the Capital where we shot the pictures below.

I figured I should start adding a picture of myself into the final cut I give my clients in homage to Alfred Hitchcock.

Here are some of the more interesting shots from our company Christmas card shoot shot at the park near the Palmer Event Center near Ladybird Lake.  Special thanks to my friend Matt Crow who came down to pull the shutter for us and help us carry the obscenely heavy bags of gear up the hill to the location. It was an exhausting shoot! Every time I get in front of the camera I just feel like the life is being sucked out of me. Thank God the results are worth it!  Thanks to JoElla Thompson for hair and make-up!

This is our Christmas card from 2003, the last time a serious amount of effort was put into a card.

I was kind of late in the game on this years company Christmas card, but it’s hard to orchestrate things as soon as you get more than one person involved.  Megan and I came down the location near the Palmer Event Center the day before just to make sure that the location that we had picked for the card would actually work and took a few test shots.  Below are a couple of our test shots from today.

Megan was ready to call it a night after this shot.  She figured why bother continuing on if we had this great shot already in the can.  But I thought it might be better to strive for something a little better.

Sherry tends to rant and rave about what I do online, but in a really good way. William seems a little quieter. Kind of the same relational dynamics between Christina and I. Though sometimes we both tend to rant and rave at odd times.

Sherry and William had engagements done at the Capital with a very jumpy Nicholas and then at the Alamo Draft House on Lamar. We seemed to have the full run of the place and they even let us in between showings of 007 into one of the theaters and shoot a couple of pictures in the glorious seats! Sherry does PR and I suppose that means she talks to a lot of people and she set up the Alamo shoot with the management. I didn’t even know they would let people shoot there for an engagement. Crazy!
