  • I love shooting in Taylor Texas! The gritty old half abandoned downtown is such a great place to wonder around with a subject. Our first shoot here in 2007 was so awesome that people have seen the pictures on the blog or in our portfolio and requested to shoot there and sometime even bring the studio’s old white couch out to throw in the street on a lazy Saturday evening.

Britni and Bryan and didn’t ask for the couch but loved our other work in Taylor so we shot Halloween afternoon before too many people started coming out in costumes. The couple was great and after a few places in Taylor we picked up and went north on 195 to the old wooden bridge. The bridge itself had been abandoned and a concrete bridge stood 50 feet away that now ran all of the traffic on this very small rural road. Nearby there were also beautiful lush fields to shoot in as well. All in all a very amazing shoot!

Couple years back I drove and drove to west Texas to shoot an amazing wedding at a little hotel in a ghost town called Marathon. My phone didn’t work there and I had to drive through a storm that stopped me dead on I-10, but to this day it is still one of my favorite weddings and I’d love to go back for another. Today I am shooting the groom’s sister Kristin’s engagement session with her fiance Seth in South Austin and the Pennyback bridge in the hills near Lake Austin. Seth owns Ideal Skate Parks and builds custom skate parks mostly for municipalities. I talked at length with Seth about building skate parks not because I am a skater, but because I was fascinated with how they could finish concrete so perfectly with such amazing curves. We had a blast shooting their engagement and finding new and fun ways at looking at Austin! Their wedding, though not at a hotel in a ghost town, will be equally fun and unique being at Austin’s own Star Hill Ranch on Hamilton Pool Road.

This was Megan and Eric’s first time in front of my camera and they did great for their engagement pictures at the Long Center and the Texas Capital. Megan’s last name is Fox but she isn’t that awful ‘actress’ from the Transformers. This Megan Fox actually doesn’t look evil like the actress Megan Fox. This Megan Fox seems to be friendly and happy. Her and Eric were great together for the pictures! I’m looking forward to their wedding in June!

I did a little clinic for my friend Coral with some of the new lighting we’ve been doing on our shoots that make them pop more than ever. She’s a brilliant available light genius and can make images really look better than life, but has very little experience using her strobes. Hence the photography clinic in Medford, Ore. On a visit to the Oregon’s Rogue Valley in Southern Oregon, Coral found some former clients she had shot who volunteered to be our models for the day. We stuck with one location because half of us were suffering from food poisoning from this place, an awful dive along the Rogue River legendary for poisoning passing river rafters because it was the only game in town, but I digress. I think Coral had shot Daniel and Naomi’s wedding some time in the past, but that was never made clear to me because of the afore mentioned food poisoning and the fact that Coral is kind of all over the place at once when she talks. Did I mention the genius part? The pictures below are from our outing.

Lyndsay and Kyle were fun downtown for their engagement at the Capital and the Amtrak station. They were very lively and didn’t blink an eye when I decided to take them up five flights of steps on to the top of a parking garage for one picture. Actually I ran up five flights of steps. They kept up. I like that in a couple. That and killer shoes….

Well, actually it wasn’t in Austin, but was instead outside of Austin some 60 miles away but I’m not really sure what the place was called or where I really was. Down a long dirt road and through some big gates we drove and onto a ranch where cattle were abundant and wandering around free crossing the road. This is where Ashley and Jordan wanted to shoot their engagement pictures far away from anything in a wonderful serene location with tall grass blowing gently in the hot summer breeze. What a great place for an engagement! Also Ashley’s horse was stabled there and was brought forth for some pictures though he was more interested in eating the tall grass in the field. I was excited when I saw the windmill and that Ashley really wanted sunset pictures in front of it! Awesome!

The Texas Capitol and SOCO are such fun places to shoot engagement pictures in Austin. What could be better? Carrie and Shaun were planning on making some of my unique save-the-date post cards from their engagement and wanted something that would work with their personalities and the the postcard. I think the pictures below show what they were looking for.

Bryan and Emily have a long distance relationship going on, but it’s not what you think. She’s in Houston and he’s in Austin. They’re having their wedding at Nature’s Point on Lake Travis, a wonderful venue for a wedding. We shot their engagement portraits at th Texas Capitol and then off to the 360 Bridge overlooking Lake Austin. Justin and Cyndi live so close to the downtown square in Georgetown that I probably almost tripped over their house the last time I was shooting there. So it made sense for them to have some of their pictures taken there. I love the fire escape stairs that are stuck to the side of so many buildings made of rusted old iron It gives so much character to the old buildings. We also drove down to the east side of Round Rock out in the green fields to a friends ranch where we found some really kitchy things to use as our backdrop. We could have stayed longer, because there was so much to shoot but the sun did set and we had to quit. It was a fun shoot and I was excited about the outcome!

Ann and Nick wanted an engagement that was very Austin so I suggested some of those places Austin and off we went to SOCO and the Amtrak Station. What great fun it was! I was able to try a few new things at Penn Field and was so happy that the fountains were both running! SOCO sure has a lot of neat things to shoot! Looking forward to Ann and Nick’s wedding at Nature’s Point in October!
