Austin musicians photography: ASPVA Youthcast!

I had the privilege of photographing the Austin School for the Performing and Visual Arts’ Youthcast. The ASPVA Youthcast is a annual youth talent search held at the Long Center. These young performers were amazingly talented, and each one was fantastic to watch.

Contestants performed before a panel of industry professionals including C.B. Hudson, member of the internationally acclaimed rock band BLUE OCTOBER, and his wife Betsy Hudson, former dancer for the Houston Texans and choreographer.

Garbiella and Jordan are very talented young sibling musicians and needed some promo photographs for future gigs and printed materials. People in the music business allow me to be very creative and indulge some of the ideas that just wouldn’t fly at a wedding or other kind of shoot. We started at the studio then moved downtown to the Long Center. I’d never shot in front of the Long Center before but was happy to explore what the location had to offer. It certainly has a fantastic view of the city and I hear the place also offers one of it’s glass enclosed wings for weddings or other events. I’ve shot both Gabriella and Jordan at stage performances for the Austin School for the Performing and Visual Arts, a new private school specializing in a k-12 education with a heavy focus on the arts.

I helped out running TV camera at church today for a Mercy Me concert. We go to a big church in Austin so there are actually four TV cameras, a director, a graphics person, a iris person and a whole pile of other people who do audio and lights who I don’t know. I also abused the ‘crew credentials’ and walked up to the stage for some fun pictures with my still cameras during the show. I had quite a pounding headache but got a few images in a very short period of time. The opening act was Bebo Norman and he’s the first couple of pictures. I’d never heard of him before. He was kind of dull. Mercy Me put on a good show though.
